Valentine’s Week Photo Caption Contest

We’re gearing up for another photo contest. This one will be a Caption contest with a Valentines’ theme.

We’re looking for an interesting photo that will elicit humorous captions. If you have one,  send it in and we’ll take a look.

The prize for the caption that receives the most votes will be a dozen 5′ tall roses from the Conklyn’s Florist on Jefferson Davis Hwy.

Look for the contest to start on 1 February – www.conklyns.com/contests.

Yellow Pages

We just received our latest “local” yellow pages book. We noticed that most of the display ads were placed by 800 number companies who just don’t happen to list their addresses.

How can you tell if a merchant is really a “local” business?  Does it matter?

  • Local merchants will have a local phone number (and perhaps an 800 number.)
  • Local merchants list their address!
  • Local merchants have a reputation in the community to maintain and thus a higher compassion for the needs of local customers.
  • Web sites are even worse! Look for an address – if there isn’t one, there’s a reason.

You will always find our local number and address in every advertisement we produce AND on our web site.
Thanks for supporting local businesses – local employeers and tax payers.

(Did you know that many of the 800 number “florists” aren’t actually “retail florists?” They are companies that take your orders and sell them to actual retail florists to design and deliver the product.)

Announcing our latest photo contest!  Enter soon for your chance at fame and fortune and perhaps a wonderful gift card.

The theme this month is “Holiday Fun!”  Any holiday picture, be it silly or serious will get you entered to win.  (We often give out numerous consolation prizes so don’t despair if your photography skills are not the most highly developed – “developed” get it?) Although my kids are arguably the cutest, I’m not eligible – so go for it!

Sweet Dreams!

Having bad dreams? Volunteers in a sleep study by Central Institute of Mental Health were more likely to report positive dreams when their rooms were infused with the scent of roses. And…this is just another reason to have roses in the bedroom!

Eat Bananas – Smell the Flowers?

Just read an article that says you can’t find bananas in Japan due to a new diet craze. Eat as many bananas as you want with room temperature water for breakfast and anything you want for lunch and diner. No snacks and go to bed before midnight. The diet designed to increase metabolism should help you loose loads of pounds. Doctors are skeptical.

Since people will do anything to loose weight, including follow any rumour they hear, we would like to start the first rumour about the incredible affect that flowers have to help you maintain a healthy weight. I personally have flowers on the table at every meal and haven’t gained a pound in years. I can still almost fit into jeans I wore 30 years ago. My kids are growing up with flowers and are at the low-normal end of the weight charts for their age groups. More research is needed but I’m sure we’re on to something!

Great Plants for low Light Areas

Blooming Plants love sun light! So how do you give your garden impact in low light areas? Focus on foliage rather than blossoms. Here are some examples of shade plants that require little maintenance:

  • Hostas
  • Ferns
  • Myrtles
  • Pachysandra
  • Spinach, kale and lettuce
  • Ivies
  • Astilbes
  • and of course, Azaleas

There are plenty of varities to choose from with flower and foliage colors that vary from shades of green to pinks, whites, reds and yellows.

Here’s one to Google:  Japanese Kerria. An interesting shrub that takes shade well and has cool yellow flowers.

Flowers can help you learn?

Patients exposed to a flowers scent completed a connect-the-dots puzzle 30% faster than those who did the puzzle odor free, according to a news article in Bottom Line about a study of the effects of odors on performance by a neurologist at the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation.

We knew this!  Our fresh flower designers are much faster than our designers who work on silk flower arrangements.  ;)

What’s Vitamin F?

Vitamin F is the term for the effect that flowers have on people!     Get it? Flowers!

Flowers feed compassion, chase away anxieties and worries and provide a boost of energy. A study at Rutgers University proves that flowers create instant delight and happiness and increase enjoyment and life satisfaction.

A gorgeous dose of Vitamin F can be found at www.conklyns.com.
