The folks at Ford Motor Company invited Conklyn’s Florist to participate in a test program for their new Transit Connect Commercial Vehicle last week.
An initial test drive of the prototype had us convinced that the Ford Transit Connect may just be what we’re looking for in a small utility delivery vehicle.
It’s a small van with a higher than average roof, a great turning radius, wonderful gas mileage and loads of options. It has gps mapping, hands free telephone and web/email clients built right into the dash.
Given our interest, Ford asked Conklyn’s to participate in a media day event where we could explain the value of this type of vehicle, in our business, to members of the automotive media. We took this as an opportunity to explain our needs to media experts and also to get their take on the vehicle and Ford commercial products in general.
I think we just might buy one when they go on the market later this year. http://www.fordvehicles.com/transitconnect/

Wednesday is Earth Day as you probably already know by now.
We have two programs designed to help you participate and recycle:
1) Recycle old flower vases. Bring in 2 of the dusty vases you have stashed away – we’ll trade you a Surprise Gift Card worth somewhere between $5 and $200.
2) Bring in that tired house plant you’ve been unable to nurture back to life and get a new one. We’ll give you a Surprise Gift Card to get you started.
Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen as part of the photosynthetic process. New studies have found many common houseplants absorb benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene, as well.
Happy Earth Day

Next week is Secretaries Week. Or…is it Administrative Professionals’ Week? The original idea was to give bosses (whom have their own day) a “designated” time to express appreciation for their staff, many of whom were “secretaries.”
Today, that term is almost offensive to some. We certainly don’t want to offend anyone so we’re asking you, “What is the best term for a time when the boss can publicly show appreciation?”
Answer our one question poll at www.conklyns.com/pages/apw.htm. One poll responder will receive a gorgeous spring bouquet delivered anywhere in our Baltimore/Washington delivery area.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, lilies are considered highly toxic to cats. While the poisonous component has not yet been identified, it is clear that small amounts of the plant, when ingested, can result in severe kidney damage. We recommend keeping lilies out of the reach of cats. It is important to note that lilies do not pose a problem for other pets or humans.

The merger of Beverly Hochstedt Florist and Conklyn’s Florist has created a new and unique option for floral designs and gifts in North Baltimore.
Beverly Hochstedt customers have been tickled with the (new to them) programs now available at a familiar, friendly location.
Now we need a logo for the store on Harford Rd.
Help us pick one by giving us your input - www.conklyns.com/pages/poll.htm.
One lucky poll respondant will be awarded a gorgeous bouquet delivered anywhere in our newly enlarged Baltimore-Washington delivery area.

Conklyn’s Florist has merged with Beverly Hochstedt Florist in Parkville, MD.
The new store will be “Conklyn’s Hochstedt Florist of Parkville.” The newly renovated store on Harford Rd. is now part of the Conklyn’s family and all of the various programs offered by Conklyn’s and conklyns.com will be available to Beverly Hochstedt’s former customers. Beverly retired after 25 years in the Baltimore suburb and Conklyn’s will now be serving her customers under the Conklyn’s Inc. umbrella.
We look forward to serving the Hochstedt customers and now offer what we believe to be the most gorgeous flowers delivered to the entire Baltimore/Washington area.

I just read that it costs 1.67 cents to make a penny. It costs almost 10 cents to make a nickel!
Think how much money (our money) the government could save if we all emptied our piggy banks once a year.
And, all of that coin could be put into interest baring accounts or donated to charity.
Everyone wins!

We’re gearing up for another photo contest. This one will be a Caption contest with a Valentines’ theme.
We’re looking for an interesting photo that will elicit humorous captions. If you have one, send it in and we’ll take a look.
The prize for the caption that receives the most votes will be a dozen 5′ tall roses from the Conklyn’s Florist on Jefferson Davis Hwy.
Look for the contest to start on 1 February – www.conklyns.com/contests.

We just received our latest “local” yellow pages book. We noticed that most of the display ads were placed by 800 number companies who just don’t happen to list their addresses.
How can you tell if a merchant is really a “local” business? Does it matter?
- Local merchants will have a local phone number (and perhaps an 800 number.)
- Local merchants list their address!
- Local merchants have a reputation in the community to maintain and thus a higher compassion for the needs of local customers.
- Web sites are even worse! Look for an address – if there isn’t one, there’s a reason.
You will always find our local number and address in every advertisement we produce AND on our web site.
Thanks for supporting local businesses – local employeers and tax payers.
(Did you know that many of the 800 number “florists” aren’t actually “retail florists?” They are companies that take your orders and sell them to actual retail florists to design and deliver the product.)
